I want you...to make a recommendation.

OK, folks. Is this a cheap one? I don't think it is. I had this idea last week to use when I didn't have a blog post for the day. I didn't realize that day would come so quickly, but I am going to use it anyway.

A lot of potential recommendeerers have shy-ed away from making me a list because making a list is pretty vast, and requires a great deal of thought, and everyone thinks that they are going to be judged based on their recommendations. Contrary to that a lot of people have made me lists, which we have posted on the website here, and maybe these people have new recommends but not quite enough new recommends to warrant an entire list. To my knowledge Huff is the only person who has begun work on a second list, but I know others have ideas. You have to!

So here is the deal. For one day and one day only I want the readers of Friends Recommend to give an on-the-fly pick via our comments section. You don't have to think long and hard about this...all I want is something you've been checking out recently that you think others might enjoy. That is it. Consider this an informal recommends day, but one that we can all benefit from. If you are reading this I expect a recommendation via the comments section. You can't get out of this. I know you are reading. I'm going to start us off with a personal pick from the editor and y'all take it from there. Please?

This is a pick that I got from the great emusic.com. I was on the lookout for a not-yet-released CD from New Amsterdam Records, and came across a pretty great catalog of recordings from this record label. I downloaded a couple bands from the label but the far-and-above standout was a band from NY called Build.

This is an instrumental rock band with violin, cello, piano, bass (upright), and drums. They write really interesting music and the whole album is only 5 tracks (a big bonus to emusic-ers). The album is self-titled. You can hear most of it on their myspace page at http://www.myspace.com/buildbuildbuild. I really like it.

hmm this does seem like a cheap post :) but i suppose i'll play along, for support or something.

i am absolutely fanatical about www.jezebel.com. it's a women's blogging platform (not that that should deter any of you men readers out there.)

what's great about it, is that while it's feminist and critical and thought-provoking, it also has posts on completely trivial and ridiculous things like desperate housewives and lost.

i guess i like that it's a normal blog site, just more often than on other sites, women's perspectives are taken into account. and turns out women's opinions run the gamut.

yup: www.jezebel.com

Unfortunately, not all of the readers here live in Baltimore, but if you do, I highly suggest you head over to Sofie's Crepes and order a BATS which stands for Bacon, Avocado, Tomato & Sour Cream. A strong runner up is Chick Peas, Fresh Cilantro, Spring Onions in a Salsa Sauce. I don't know what a salsa sauce is, but I didn't detect any on mine, but it was all the better for it.

If it wasn't for the crepe itself, I could easily make these at home. Those ingredients go great together, but there is just something special that comes from the warmth of the crepe.

This is a high recommend.

radiolab - an NPR radio show that you can download and listen to for free. mostly neurologically based but delves into some pretty larger life questions like: why we laugh, why we sleep, multi universes.

i suggest you download at least 3 and listen to them... oh jeebuss....

Tao Lin. Most known it seems for his poetry as The Strand only carries that publication and not his other two: eeeee eee eeee & bed. I stumbled upon him while searching for a Miranda July book (which I did find at The Strand), but I'm going to go order these now.

I've been a fan of a radio show called the Sound of Young America for a few years now. The show started on a college radio station and it was intentionally given the pompous public radioesque title. The show is now carried by PRI so that "joke" doesn't really work and is misleading. The show's biggest audience is on the internet via podcast which is how I found it and still listen.

Anyway, it bills itself as a show about things that are awesome, and it's more or less a guy in his mid-late 20's interviewing people you like in his apartment. Past guests include Jeffrey Tambor of Arrested Development, Jenna Fischer of the Office, and even the Radiolab folk.

What got me hooked is Jesse Thorn (the host)'s interviewing style. It's pretty relaxed and conversational and there's some joking around and I feel like a lot of the guests open up and are more themselves than you might hear in another interview. It sounds like they enjoy themselves rather than it being just another stop on the publicity tour.

If you're an AD fan, the Tambor interview is a good one to check out. Otherwise, find the podcast in the ITunes store (it's free) and find someone else you're interested in. Or go to the website at www.maximumfun.org.

If you're into that, there's a related show that I now enjoy even more called "Jordan, Jesse Go" which is the host of TSOYA with his best friend and usually a guest (like a Rob Corddry or John Hodgman) goofing off. It's hard to say if I like this show on it's own or if it is in large part because I already felt like I knew the hosts from the other show.

I recommend the vegan german chocolate cake from One World Cafe. Robin ordered one for her graduation party and damn it was good! It was not overwhelmingly sweet like some GC icings, just delicious chocolatey coconutiness. I believe you can get it by the slice in the restaurant and cafe, which you should definitely do.

Great recommend, Jenny. I also had one for my birthday and it was delicious. I even had a sparkler in mine.
